Iraqi Kurdistan authorities detain key opposition figure by security personnel
In the Kurdistan region of Iraq, the leader of the New Generation Movement (NGM), Shaswar Abdulwahid, is currently in detention following his arrest on August 12, 2025. His trial has been repeatedly adjourned, with the next hearing scheduled for August 28, 2025.
The reason for his arrest and detention is a six-month prison sentence issued against him in absentia related to a defamation case filed by a former member of parliament from his party. The case dates back to 2019 and accuses Abdulwahid of threatening to publish explicit images. He was sentenced under Article 431 of the Iraqi Penal Code, which addresses threats against persons or property.
A court denied Abdulwahid's bail request, citing his repeated failure to appear for hearings and questioning, which the judge said did not provide sufficient guarantees to prevent disruption of proceedings. His detention is currently extended until further notice.
The arrest was carried out by security forces, initially alleged to be linked to the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), though confirmed by local police. The political context surrounding his arrest is complex, as the NGM is an opposition party holding 15 parliamentary seats, and its leader has faced multiple arrests and even an assassination attempt since founding the party in 2017.
The New Generation Movement emerged as a powerful opposition group, challenging the influential parties PUK and Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP). The situation underscores ongoing political tensions and concerns about suppression of dissent by dominant Kurdistan region parties.

This incident has sparked controversy and raised questions about the rule of law and political freedom in the Kurdistan region. The opposition leader's arrest comes amidst political wrangling between the rivals PUK and KDP, which has derailed the formation of the new government in Kurdistan. The whereabouts of Shaswar Abdulwahid are currently unknown. He has also filed several lawsuits at the Federal Supreme Court in Baghdad challenging key regional government actions and has strong ties with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani.
