Hey there!

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, along with his French and British counterparts, are set to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtschi this Friday in Geneva, as per reports from the German Press Agency.

Following the initiation of Israel's offensive against Iran last Friday, Wadephul initially had plans to visit Lebanon, Syria, and Israel, but he altered his itinerary after heading to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman for crisis talks instead. Oman, a country with exceptional contacts with Tehran, played a significant role in these emergency discussions.

Wadephul's primary aim behind this trip was to orchestrate a unified strategy among the E3 nations (Germany, France, and the UK, who have decades-long negotiations with Tehran over its nuclear program) as well as Iran's Arab neighbors. The goal was to find a diplomatic resolution for the war.

Before Israel launched a major attack on Iran last Friday, the US and Iran had been negotiating for almost two months, with the assistance of Oman as mediator, but peace talks were halted due to disagreements over uranium enrichment. Iran had recently produced uranium nearly at weapons-grade level. While Tehran displayed a willingness to downscale its program, as per the 2015 Vienna Agreement, it resisted abandoning its enrichment capacity altogether.

US President Donald Trump reiterated the demand for "unconditional surrender" on Wednesday, but he did not entirely rule out additional negotiations, stating that it wasn't too late. Trump departed from the Vienna Agreement in 2018, after which Tehran ceased adhering to its terms.

As the conflict between Israel and Iran continues unabated, observers have expressed minimal optimism regarding a diplomatic solution to the nuclear standoff with Iran. Israel alleges that Iran's nuclear and missile programs pose an existential threat.

Bonus Insight:The recent diplomatic endeavors to address the mounting conflict between Israel and Iran involve crucial international players, which include Germany, France, the UK, Iran, and Oman. The focus of these efforts centers on efforts to mediate and negotiate potential de-escalation routes amid ongoing military exchanges and counterattacks.

Historically, Iran's Foreign Affairs Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has participated actively in diplomacy, including meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin to seek backing and hopefully coordinate reactions to the conflict. The roles of Germany, France, and the UK, often via the P5+1 negotiations and broader EU diplomacy, have been instrumental in limiting Iranian nuclear aspirations and reducing regional tensions through dialogue and agreements. Oman has been a silent mediator in regional disputes, offering a neutral platform for unofficial discussions.

While specific face-to-face meetings involving Germany, France, the UK, Iran, and Oman have not been extensively covered in recent reports, the diplomatic arena paradoxically remains engrossed in efforts to manage and potentially resolve the Israel-Iran conflict. Iran's diplomatic engagement, European backing for negotiations, and Oman's mediating role remain key components in diplomatic attempts aimed at de-escalation, as Israel persists in military actions against Iranian targets.

The Commission is also proposing to extend the scope of the programme to include the following areas: policy-and-legislation, politics, general-news, and war-and-conflicts, such as the current conflict between Israel and Iran. The forthcoming talks between German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtschi, along with their French and British counterparts, could potentially provide a platform for policy discussions regarding Middle Eastern politics and the ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran.
