Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's two-day official visit to Pakistan, from August 2 to 3, 2025, aimed to strengthen bilateral trade and security cooperation between the two countries. This was the President's first visit since taking office.

Upon arrival, President Pezeshkian was greeted by a guard of honour presented by a contingent of the Pakistan armed forces. The national anthems of both countries were played during the arrival ceremony.

President Pezeshkian held meetings with top Pakistani civilian and military leaders, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Delegation-level talks resulted in the signing of 12 MoUs and cooperation agreements in sectors such as transportation, science and technology, tourism, and free trade. The aim was to boost economic ties and raise bilateral trade from the current $3 billion to $10 billion.

Security concerns, especially combating terrorism along the shared border in Balochistan, were also discussed. Iran seeks to join Pakistan and China’s Silk Road initiative to enhance regional trade connectivity.

The visit was significant given the complex geopolitical context, including US sanctions on Iran which pose challenges to expanding trade. Pakistani officials expressed willingness to help ease tensions between Iran and the US as part of improving relations.

President Pezeshkian paid homage at the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal in Lahore, highlighting cultural connections between the two nations. He also planted a sapling in the lawn of the PM House.

Later this evening, President Masoud Pezeshkian is scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari to discuss expanding bilateral relations. A luncheon in honor of the Iranian president has been arranged at the Prime Minister's House, attended by senior government officials and diplomats.

Important issues such as trade, energy, border cooperation, and regional peace and security will be discussed during the meetings. The visit is being viewed as the start of a new chapter in Pak-Iran relations, aimed at strengthening economic and diplomatic ties between the two neighbors.
