"Steering Clear of Undercover Infiltration" - SPD Warns of Potential Iranian Intelligence Operations

Germany has been a desired destination for many fleeing Iran due to the ongoing Israeli military conflicts. SPD spokesperson Sebastian Fiedler raises concerns about the possibility of Iran's intelligence services capitalizing on this situation, with a particular focus on male refugees.

In an interview with Stern, Fiedler expressed worries that the Revolutionary Guards could use the refugee crisis as an opportunity to infiltrate Germany. He advocates for maintaining the country's security, given the influx of refugees, and discourages the blanket deportation ban proposed by the Greens.

Last year, only 14 individuals were deported from Germany to Iran, with five deportations happening in the first quarter of 2022. Each case was meticulously assessed to ensure the safety of the individuals and to determine if there was a risk of death or torture upon their return. As per Fiedler, it currently appears challenging to deport anyone to Iran.

The parliamentary managing director of the Greens, Filiz Polat, has called for an immediate nationwide ban on the deportation of Iranian refugees. "Those who have sought refuge with us must be shielded from death or persecution and should not be returned to a totalitarian regime and warzone," Polat stated.

Tensions between Israel and Iran escalated recently, with Israel launching attacks on several key targets in Iran, including the capital Tehran and the Natanz nuclear facility. Suspicions of a potential US entry into the conflict have surfaced, prompted by Donald Trump's recent hardline stance against Tehran and his indirect threats against Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Speculation about the role of Turkish intelligence operations in Germany has arisen in the past, involving spying and attempting to influence Turkish communities, as well as meddling in political decision-making processes. However, there is no clear evidence to suggest similar activities by Iranian intelligence services at present.

The SPD spokesperson, Sebastian Fiedler, has urged caution regarding potential infiltration by Iran's intelligence services among male refugees, particularly given the influx of refugees from Iran due to war-and-conflicts. In a debate about deportation policies, Fiedler advocates for maintaining community and employment policies that prioritize security while discouraging blanket bans such as the one proposed by the Alliance 90/The Greens. Meanwhile, the parliamentary managing director of the Greens, Filiz Polat, advocates for an immediate nationwide ban on the deportation of Iranian refugees, citing concerns about their safety upon return to a potential warzone. Despite past concerns about Turkish Intelligence Operations influencing political decision-making processes and meddling in Turkish communities, there is currently no clear evidence to suggest similar activities by Iranian intelligence services in Germany.
