Thousands are on the move, escaping Israeli military strikes. A growing number of Iranians are seeking refuge in Germany, with even more expected in the coming weeks.
The SPD has sounded the alarm, cautioning that the Iranian regime could exploit this situation for their benefit. Sebastian Fiedler, the SPD's interior policy spokesman in the Bundestag, expressed concern in stern. "With people seeking protection in Germany, we must also ensure our security, particularly among male refugees," he stated. "We must bar the Iranian regime, notably the Revolutionary Guards, from capitalizing on the refugees' plight to smuggle their agents into our country."
Fiedler rebuked the Greens' call for an immediate ban on deportations for Iranian refugees residing in Germany. Last year, only 14 individuals were deported to Iran, while in the first quarter of this year, there were five. According to Fiedler, each case individually assesses whether the deportees face significant threats, such as death or torture, in their home country. He believes that currently, deportation to Iran is highly improbable.
Greens Demand Immediate Halt on Deportations to Iran
Filiz Polat, the parliamentary business manager of the Greens, insisted on a "nationwide, immediate ban on deportations to Iran." In an interview with taz, she argued that asylum seekers and refugees fleeing to Germany should be protected from persecution and war, and thus not be deported to a dictatorship.
