Iranian Government Launches Crackdown on Citizens within the Country

By Marko Schlichting

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul laid into the Iranian regime during a recent television appearance, yet he plans to sit down with the Iranian foreign minister later this week to discuss ending the war with Israel. Wadephul isn't holding his breath for U.S. intervention.

Five weeks into the job, Wadephul finds himself amidst a pair of heated conflicts. In the Israel-Iran standoff, he plans to powwow with his British and French counterparts on Friday to discuss the Iranian nuclear program. The goal is to secure a guarantee that Iran will only use its nuclear program for peaceful purposes.

Politics: "Why bother with diplomacy?" Trump's belligerent Iran stance

However, the road to peace won't be easy. Wadephul admits that Iran needs to take significant confidence-building measures. "This regime is a regime of injustice that oppresses its population," he said on the show. To date, over 900 executions have taken place in Iran this year alone. Asked about a possible Iranian regime change, Wadephul added, "Let's not sugarcoat it. This regime is a plague on the Iranian people. But the Iranian people should decide for themselves who governs them." Wadephul believes Israel isn't clamoring for a regime change, with its primary focus on disarming Iran.

Wadephul believes the U.S. won't be jumping into the fray any time soon, citing statements from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. However, he's convinced, "The Americans are preparing to strike back. That's a clear message to Iran: negotiate, and don't mess around."

Germany stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Israel, according to Wadephul: "We agree that this Iranian regime has the intention to wipe Israel off the map. And if the Israeli government concludes that Iran is now capable of doing so with nuclear weapons, long-range missiles, and other means, then Israel must have the right to defend itself."

Politics: "Burden of leadership" Germany's challenge in the Israel-Iran conflict

Despite this, Wadephul is one of the few Union politicians to also criticize Israel, particularly its government's actions in the Gaza Strip. "We're staring at an unbearable humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip," he said. "Israel, despite its right to self-defense, has nearly fully blockaded the Gaza Strip from receiving humanitarian aid." The CDU politician added, "I'm ultimately in a Christian party, and all human lives are equally important."

Germany carries a heavy responsibility for the security and existence of the State of Israel. "But let's face it," Wadephul said. "We can still voice criticisms over Israel's policies." Wadephul demands, "Hamas must be disarmed. And Israel, as a democratic country governed by the rule of law, must be held to a different standard."
