In a sequence of operations codenamed "Operation Rising Lion," the Israeli Air Force struck various significant Iranian infrastructure facilities, including nuclear sites, military bases, top military figures, and key nuclear scientists. The attacks targeted uranium enrichment capabilities at Natanz, damaged nuclear facilities in Esfahan, and aimed at dismantling air defenses near Fordow.

The Israeli Defense Forces announced the completion of the attacks via Telegram overnight, revealing that the series of strikes also targeted oil and gas fields and energy industry installations.

Designated Targets

The Israeli heightened actions reached beyond Iran's nuclear installations, as they included the Iranian Defense Ministry in Tehran and the headquarters of a state-owned nuclear research organization. According to Iranian news agency Tasnim, one of the Defense Ministry's buildings sustained slight damages in an Israel attack.

Oil Depot Bombing

Amid the offensive, Iran's oil depot in the Shahran district reportedly faced bombardment. Iranian portal SNN reported that the situation was brought under control, but videos from Iranian media showed burning oil tanks releasing thick smoke.

Regional Tensions Escalating

These dramatic events follow a series of increasing hostilities between the two nations, including direct and proxy confrontations. Since October 2023, Israel has fought Iranian proxy forces, and in October 2024, Iran launched its largest ballistic missile attack on Israel to date[1][2].

The attacks are further motivated by the collapse of nuclear negotiations and a recent UN resolution finding Iran non-compliant with its nuclear non-proliferation obligations[2].

Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz had earlier warned that Tehran would burn if there were further Iranian rocket strikes on the Israeli civilian population. The escalation has led to at least six deaths and several injuries in Israel from new waves of attacks.

Global Response

International backlash was swift as numerous countries called on Israel and Iran to de-escalate tensions. Such condemnations are framed within the context of the significant global implications of this potential regional war[1][2].

Although the U.S., while not directly involved in the military strikes, has publicly praised Israel's actions in some statements, it is officially opposed to Israeli strikes on Iran's oil facilities[2]. Additionally, the escalation has led to the cancellation of planned nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran in Oman, further hindering diplomatic resolution.
