The diplomatic standoff between the E3 (Germany, France, and the United Kingdom) and Iran continues, with no substantial progress reported in recent talks. The latest news from Iran, as stated by French President Emmanuel Macron, is not considered serious.

The E3 has offered to delay the 'snapback mechanism' – a process that would reimpose UN sanctions on Iran – for up to six months, in an attempt to enable serious negotiations. This offer, however, comes with conditions, including Iran accounting for its large stock of enriched uranium and engaging in talks with the U.S.

The UN Security Council, consisting of 15 members, will vote on Friday on a resolution aimed at permanently lifting UN sanctions on Iran. This vote is a requirement after the E3 initiated the process to reimpose these sanctions on Iran, following their assessment that the talks with Tehran were not serious.

Despite the E3's efforts to prevent Iran from activating the 'snapback mechanism', it appears that Iran has not been deterred. The reimposition of international sanctions on Iran by the end of the month, as indicated by President Macron, seems increasingly likely.

The E3's actions are a response to Iran's breaches of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA), the nuclear deal that was agreed upon in 2015. The E3's foreign ministers, the European Union foreign policy chief, and their Iranian counterpart held a phone call on Wednesday to discuss the matter further.

The door remains open to try and reach a deal before the deadline expires. The E3's representative in the negotiations with Tehran on the JCPoA is the European External Action Service coordinator for the JCPoA, who presented compromise packages to Iran in 2022.

European powers initiated a 30-day process at the end of August to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran. This move was a significant step in the ongoing diplomatic tussle between the E3 and Iran. As the vote approaches, the world waits to see if the E3's efforts will be successful in halting Iran's progress towards activating the 'snapback mechanism'.
