Iran nears acquisition of nuclear weapon, stated Israel, highlighting airstrikes on nuclear facilities

FreshTake:

Israel has taken action against Iran's nuclear program, carrying out a "precise, preemptive strike" as claimed by the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) spokesperson, BG Effie Defrin. The strikes, which occurred on June 12 and 13, 2025, targeted key Iranian nuclear infrastructure and were a response to the Iranian regime's ongoing hostility towards Israel.

According to Defrin, the objective of the strikes was to protect Israel's right to exist and ensure its future, as well as to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon that could pose a threat to Israel and the entire world.

In response to the Israeli strikes, Iran launched a series of ballistic missiles towards Israel, resulting in damage to both countries. Israel's Iron Dome defense system managed to intercept many of the incoming missiles, and several hit Tel Aviv, causing fires and injuring 21 people, with two in serious condition.

The United States provided assistance to Israel during the attacks, with U.S. troops at bases in Iraq and Syria taking shelter in bunkers. Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has threatened further retaliation against Israel.

The Israeli campaign is expected to continue for weeks, with the potential for further strikes and retaliatory measures from Iran. The success of the air campaign in permanently degrading Iran's nuclear threat remains unclear.
