Deadliest Strikes: Iran's Top Commanders Fall in Israeli Airstrikes
Iran: Leader of Revolutionary Guards Suffers Fatal Casualty
Israel has taken a significant blow to Iran's military forces, with the death of top commanders. Late last night, General Major Ali Shadmani, the highest commander of the Revolutionary Guards, met his demise in an airstrike, according to the Israeli military. There's no confirmation from Iran yet, but Israel's army described him as the "highest military commander".
Shadmani had only just taken over the position from his predecessor, Maj. Gen. Gholam Ali Rashid, who was killed in an Israeli attack on Friday. Shadmani and Rashid were both commanders of the powerful Revolutionary Guard's central headquarters Chatam al-Anbiya, a subdivision of the General Staff, responsible for coordinating various military operations.
This isn't the first time Israel has targeted Iran's commanders. In fact, around 20 generals have been killed so far, including some who were killed in their apartments in metropolitan areas. There were also dozens of civilian casualties resulting from the attacks on densely populated regions of the capital.
The Rise and Fall of Iran's Highest Commanders
Major General Mohammad Bagheri, who served as the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces since 2016, was one of the highest-ranking commanders killed. Bagheri, considered the second-highest officer in the Iranian military hierarchy, was ranked only below Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. He was killed in an Israeli missile strike at the onset of Israel's attack, which targeted a subterranean command bunker in Tehran where he was meeting with fellow senior officials. Bagheri was instrumental in coordinating Iran’s regular army and paramilitary units and shaping the country’s military doctrine.
The Escalating Conflict
Israel intensified its attacks on Iran in the morning, with Iran retaliating by firing a "rain of rockets" at Israel. The Israeli army's air defense is currently in operation to repel the threat. Meanwhile, explosions have been reported in the areas of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The leadership in Tehran insists that their nuclear program serves civilian purposes, while Israel claims it wants to prevent Iran from building a nuclear bomb. Time will tell how this conflict unfolds.
