Child benefit coming soon automatically, why not welfare too? - Iran-Israel War Escalates as Global Oil and Nuclear Risks Grow

Tensions between Iran and Israel have escalated into a prolonged conflict, now stretching beyond two weeks. The fighting involves direct strikes, regional proxy battles, and threats to global oil supplies. Meanwhile, separate reports reveal that millions of eligible individuals in Germany fail to claim vital social benefits due to bureaucratic hurdles and stigma.

The war began with Iran and Israel exchanging missile strikes, drawing in US allies and Hezbollah. Iran has threatened to permanently block the Strait of Hormuz, a move that would disrupt global oil flows. Israel, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, sees the conflict as an opportunity to weaken Iran's nuclear capabilities and push for regime change. Its key demands include the destruction of ballistic missile systems and the elimination of around 400 kg of highly enriched uranium, which it views as an existential threat.

The US initially aimed to dismantle Iran's nuclear and missile programmes but may now consider limited strikes for negotiation leverage. If diplomacy fails, larger attacks or even a strike on Iran's leadership, such as Ayatollah Khamenei, remain possible. Recent intelligence briefings confirm Iran has restarted its nuclear activities, raising the stakes further. Netanyahu's government also appears to be using the conflict to intervene in Lebanon with minimal international resistance. Unlike former US President Donald Trump, who reportedly underestimated Iran's economic influence, Netanyahu sees strategic value in keeping the region destabilised. Unrelated to the conflict, German welfare statistics show a persistent issue with unclaimed benefits. Between 37% and 56% of those eligible for former *Bürgergeld* support never apply. Similarly, nearly two-thirds of qualifying seniors do not seek basic pension assistance. Reasons include confusion over application processes, a belief in self-reliance, and fear of social stigma. The complexity of the system discourages many from accessing aid they are entitled to.

The Iran-Israel war continues to threaten regional stability, with risks of broader economic disruption and prolonged violence. Military success, however, does not ensure political resolution. In Germany, the failure to claim social benefits highlights ongoing challenges in welfare access, leaving many without necessary support despite meeting eligibility requirements.
