Iran convenes with three European powers in Istanbul to deliberate on nuclear negotiations, as per Iranian representative's disclosure.

2025: A Critical Turning Point for the Iran Nuclear Deal

Diplomats from Iran and the E3 (Britain, France, and Germany) met in Istanbul on Friday, discussing the faltering 2015 nuclear deal. Iran's deputy foreign minister shared the update without revealing any progress. These discussions occurred ahead of a projected fifth round of U.S.-Iran talks.

The E3, under the U.N. resolution ratifying the 2015 pact, may invoke the "snapback mechanism" to reimpose U.N. sanctions on Iran if they fail to find a suitable resolution for the nuclear issue. If a deal isn't reached by August, the E3 might trigger this mechanism. The deadline for such actions is October 18.

During the talks, Iran expressed eagerness for further discussions if necessary, as stated by Iran's deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi. He asserted, "Iran and the E3 remain committed to diplomacy, aiming to make optimal use of it."

Relations between the E3 and Iran have strained over the past year, despite occasional gatherings. The strain arises from new sanctions imposed on Iran over its ballistic missile program, the detention of foreign citizens, and support for Russia in its war against Ukraine.

It is essential to note that the European powers are not currently involved in negotiations between Iran and the U.S. However, the E3 have been working closely with the U.S., focusing on the appropriate use of the snapback mechanism and increasing pressure on Iran regarding its nuclear program.

On the same day, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a meeting with the national security advisors of the E3 powers, discussing both Ukraine and Iran.

The 2025 scenario for the Iran nuclear deal appears tense and diplomatically urgent, with the E3 contemplating snapback sanctions if an extensible agreement is not reached. The ongoing negotiations will heavily influence the deal's survival.
