In a significant development, Iran has executed Babak Shahbazi, a contractor, for spying on behalf of Israel. The execution was reported by Iranian state media on Wednesday.

Shahbazi was linked to the espionage case that led to the execution of Esmaeil Fekri, another individual, in June. Both men were accused of working together to pass intelligence to Israel's Mossad intelligence service.

According to official reports, at least nine executions of Iranians accused of spying for Israel have been carried out in recent months. This sharp rise in execution cases for spying for Israel in Iran has been reported.

Shahbazi's role in the alleged espionage was as a contractor installing cooling equipment. He was accused of gathering information from sensitive sites, including military-linked facilities.

Esmail Fekri, who was executed by hanging on June 16, 2025, after being convicted of passing sensitive intelligence and other crimes, was arrested in 2023.

Shahbazi's lawyer sought an appeal before Iran's Supreme Court, but the request was rejected.

This execution comes amidst increasing tension between Iran and Israel. The Israeli government has not yet commented on the executions.

The rise in the number of such execution cases for spying for Israel has raised concerns about human rights and the rule of law in Iran. Amnesty International has called for an immediate halt to these executions, stating that they violate international law.

This is a developing story and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
