IPL surprise: Samson joins CSK, Ashwin re-joins RR in major trade deal
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is buzzing with speculation as the potential transfer of Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals (RR) to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) looms.
Sanju Samson, who has been a key player for RR, has been retained by the franchise for ₹18 crore but has reportedly expressed a desire to leave ahead of IPL 2026. He has requested either a trade or release for the auction.
CSK has shown interest in acquiring Samson, but several roadblocks have emerged. RR's lead owner Manoj Badale has reportedly demanded either Ravindra Jadeja or Ruturaj Gaikwad from CSK in exchange for Samson. However, CSK has rejected this demand, unwilling to part with key players. They have also refused to include Shivam Dube in a trade deal.
Ravichandran Ashwin, CSK spinner, has explained that the trade might not work because RR would find it hard to get valuable players in return from other franchises, and CSK generally does not trade away star players like Jadeja or Dube.
Other teams, notably Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), are also interested in Samson as a captain and keeper, but face financial constraints due to Samson’s high contract cost.
Despite ongoing talks, no confirmed agreement has been reached, and Samson likely has little control over the trade decision. If the trade fails, he might enter the auction.
Sanju Samson, who has been associated with RR for 11 years, has acknowledged the role the Royals and owner Manoj Badale played in shaping his career. In a recent podcast, he laughed off a question about his potential departure without denying it.
In 2022, Samson enjoyed his best season, scoring 531 runs at an average of 48.27. He played a significant role in bringing RR close to the IPL title, finishing as runners-up to Gujarat Titans. Sanju Samson is Rajasthan's most successful captain, with 33 wins since taking over the reins. He has scored 4,027 runs in 149 matches for RR.
The RR official X account posted a card quoting Samson's remarks about the franchise, which many interpreted as a farewell hint. Social media speculation suggests Samson may be leaving RR.
If the trade goes through, it could alter the balance of two powerhouse teams. The IPL 2026 auction is still months away, but the potential trade could shake up the league.
Meanwhile, Samson will be playing alongside his brother in the Kerala Club League (KCL). It remains to be seen if he will continue his IPL journey with RR or join CSK.
