Sabah, Malaysia, to Introduce Traditional Sports Across Districts

In an effort to promote and preserve cultural heritage, the Sabah Youth and Sports Ministry has revealed plans to introduce traditional Sabahan sports competitions in every district of the state. The strategy aims to engage the youth and foster a sense of community pride.

Datuk Fairuz Renddan, the Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports, revealed the plans during the Kaamatan Festival Traditional Sports Competition, stating, "With the assistance of major state bodies such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Industry, Petronas, and others, our traditional sports will be presented at every zone and district."

The Kaamatan Festival, an annual celebration acknowledging the harvest and community spirit, is where many of these traditional sports are showcased. Traditional sports in Sabah include the arm wrestling known as Mipulos, the roping of buffalo, various forms of shooting, catapulting, and tug-of-war.

These sports not only reflect the state's rich cultural roots but also serve as a means of instilling a love for heritage that shall never be forgotten. Datuk Fairuz added, "This initiative is beneficial not only for our future generation but also for preserving our culture and promoting our tradition."

The Sabah Sports Board and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia are collaborating to extend the reach of these sports beyond Penampang district to other areas. A total of ten traditional sports will be competed at the Kaamatan Festival Traditional Sports Competition, which took place from May 24-25 at SMK Bahang in Penampang.

Present at the event were Terrence Edward Pudin, the Sabah Sports Board general manager, and Siti Ayu Haniza Abdul Wahab, the Petronas Sabah and Labuan general manager.

Traditional Sabahan sports, such as Mipulos, Buffalo roping, and tug-of-war, will now be introduced across all districts of Sabah, aiming to engage the youth and preserve cultural heritage, as revealed by Datuk Fairuz Renddan during the Kaamatan Festival. This initiative, supported by major state bodies, aims to extend beyond Penampang district and promote Sabah's cultural tradition nationally.
