Iowa's New Starting Quarterback: Mark Gronowski

Mark Gronowski, a graduate transfer from South Dakota State University, will be the starting quarterback for Iowa in the 2023 season opener against Albany on Aug. 30.

Gronowski had a highly successful college career at the FCS level with South Dakota State. He boasted an impressive 49-6 record as a starter, passing for 10,330 yards, 93 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions, while also rushing for 1,767 yards and 37 touchdowns[1][2].

Last season, Gronowski threw for 2,721 yards and 23 touchdowns. His rushing abilities were also on display, as he rushed for 1,767 yards and 37 scores at South Dakota State[1].

The Hawkeyes experienced some inconsistency at quarterback with Cade McNamara transferring to East Tennessee State and Brendan Sullivan transferring to Tulane. This move to bring in Gronowski is expected to bring stability and a passing threat to Iowa's offense in the opener against Albany[2][4].

Gronowski had offseason shoulder surgery that caused him to miss spring practice with his new team. However, he was a highly decorated player on the FCS level at South Dakota State, winning two national titles with the Jackrabbits in 2022 and 2023[1].

It is worth noting that Gronowski considered putting his name in for the NFL draft after entering the transfer portal. However, he chose to transfer to Iowa instead, meaning his records pertain solely to his college achievements[1].

As for his professional football record, there is no indication that Gronowski has played in the NFL or any other professional league as of the 2023 season opener.

With Gronowski at the helm, the Hawkeyes will be looking to improve upon their 2024 season, where they finished with an 8-5 record, 6-3 in the Big Ten, and lost to Missouri in the Music City Bowl.
