IOA President PT Usha expresses joy over the green light for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, but the chosen city remains undetermined
India Bids to Host the 2030 Commonwealth Games with Ahmedabad as the Proposed Host City
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has formally endorsed India's bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad emerging as the primary proposed host city. This announcement was made on August 13, 2025, following a meeting with representatives from the Commonwealth Games Association India, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and a senior state delegation led by Harsh Sanghavi, Minister of Sports, Government of Gujarat.
The meeting aimed to gather insights on planning expectations, governance standards, and milestones for the bid. After the meeting concluded, an IOA source revealed that Ahmedabad is likely to host the Commonwealth Games 2030.
The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in Ahmedabad, a world-class sports complex, has been inspected by a delegation from Commonwealth Sport. This complex is believed to support the Games effectively if Ahmedabad secures the bid.
However, it's important to note that Ahmedabad is not yet the official host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Other cities like Bhubaneswar and New Delhi are also in consideration. The final bid proposal from India is expected to be submitted by August 31, 2025.
The decision on the host country will be made by the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow in the last week of November 2025. Canada has withdrawn from the bidding, improving India's chances, but Nigeria remains a potential competitor.
The IOA has unanimously approved India's bid for hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games. PT Usha, the President of the IOA, expressed her delight at the approval. The discussion during the meeting focused on key elements of a Games bid, including vision and legacy plans, governance and institutional support, sustainability, transport strategy, sports programme, accessibility, infrastructure planning, athlete services, and Games-time operations.
If Ahmedabad is chosen as the host city, it will mark the third time India has hosted the Commonwealth Games, following the 2010 Games in New Delhi and the 2010 Games in Delhi. The city is eager to showcase its modern infrastructure and rich cultural heritage to the world.
As the deadline for the final bid submission approaches, Ahmedabad continues to prepare diligently, hoping to secure the opportunity to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Until then, the city holds the status of the probable host city but is not officially confirmed. The final announcement of the host city and nation will be made in November 2025.
