Chilling Out with Old Pals: Merz and Trump Plan to Chat it Up

Invitation Extended: Trump Invited by Merz for a Visit to Germany - Invitation Extended: Trump Receives Invitation from Merz to Visit Germany

Things are heating up between the old buddies, Merz and Trump!

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) gave a friendly welcome to none other than President Donnie for a friendly chat over the phone. The Prez even hinted that he might pack his bags and scoot over to Germany sometime soon. You know, just hang out at Ramstein and maybe catch up at the G7 summit that's coming up in June.

Trump, having paid Germany a visit only once as President (apart from those quick boogies to Ramstein) at the 2017 G20 summit, seems up for it. Merz, on the other hand, can't wait to jet-set over to the US before the G7 and NATO summits. The G7 is slated to take place in Canada in mid-June, followed by the NATO summit in The Hague.

Digging into the nitty-gritty of Ukraine

The primary talking point for these two long-lost pals was none other than Ukraine. They agreed to align their efforts towards ending the Russian invasion, according to government spokesman Stefan Kornelius. The Chancellor (that'd be Merz) echoed President Trump's sentiments that the violence in Ukraine needs to cease pronto. C’mon, Russia! Let's get this party started with a truce, so we can pound the tables and talk peace, m'kay?

Trump, the can-do guy he is, said he was all for supporting European peace projects.

Paying off those pesky trade debts

Trump and Merz were on the same page when it came to resolving their trade squabbles, Kornelius reported.

The Skinny on German Politics

Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine – that's all anyone seems to be talking about these days. The ongoing conflict has changed wind directions in German foreign policy, with an uptick in defense spending and a reevaluation of geopolitical LCD settings[2]. The brothers-in-arms (and ladies, of course) are looking into ways to pool resources for our Beloved Ukraine. But we ain't got all the goodies yet.

Trade - it's complicated. There's some serious tension between the US and Germany. Germany relies heavily on US trade partnerships but stands to face tariffs that dramatiusly affect its exports[2]. The Europeans are trying to find ways to loosen the US's grip, which might spice things up in the markets[2].

Now, about the invitations... It's looking like Merz is pondering a visit across the pond before the G7 and NATO shindigs in June, but we ain't got no definite dates[2]. As for Donnie, he's thinking about returning Germany's hospitality. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope for some epic bonding time! There's no US ambassador to Germany at the moment, as the position's been vacant since the departure of Ambassador Amy Gutmann in July 2024[4]. Hmm, guess we'll have to wait for Mr. X to hit the ground running to get this party started!
