Investigating authorities have issued a summons to New York Attorney General Letitia James regarding her inquiries into Donald Trump and the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Investigators from the federal government have issued subpoenas to New York Attorney General Letitia James, allegedly in connection with her investigations involving Donald Trump and the National Rifle Association (NRA).

In a series of developments, New York Attorney General Letitia James finds herself at the centre of a political storm, with allegations of misconduct and federal investigations casting a shadow over her tenure.

In a 2024 civil trial, James' office accused the National Rifle Association (NRA) of breaking state laws and its own policies. This litigation followed an earlier lawsuit in 2020, where James accused the NRA of spending millions on executives' personal expenses. The NRA was ultimately ordered to update its policies to comply with New York's nonprofit laws.

However, the Attorney General has not been without her critics. John A. Sarcone, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of New York, who had never been a prosecutor before his interim appointment in March, has been a vocal critic. Sarcone unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination to challenge James in the 2022 election. He has criticised James for statements made during her 2018 campaign, where she promised to go after President Donald Trump.

Sarcone's comments did not sit well with Governor Kathy Hochul, who stated that the Trump administration should leave James alone and let her do her job. Hochul also criticised the federal government for trying to get in the way of James' pursuit of cases.

The federal government's interest in James' work became more evident when it was revealed that the U.S. attorney in Albany is investigating James' civil cases against President Trump and the NRA. Federal prosecutors have issued subpoenas to James' office, but the Department of Justice and the U.S. attorney's office did not respond to requests for comment.

The controversy surrounding James reached a new height when a New York judge ordered Trump and his associates to pay more than $450 million in the case brought by James. The case, which alleged fraud in inflating Trump's net worth for bank loans, marked a significant victory for James.

Despite the ongoing investigations and criticisms, James' office stands behind their successful litigation against the Trump Organization and the NRA. They have stated that "any weaponization of the justice system should disturb every American."

This story has been updated to include a comment from Governor Kathy Hochul, who has reiterated her support for James and called for the federal government to stay out of New York's affairs. As the investigations continue, James' tenure as Attorney General remains under scrutiny, with many watching to see how this unfolds.
