In a heated political exchange, Sahra Wagenknecht, leader of the BSW party, and former federal economics minister Robert Habeck find themselves at odds. Wagenknecht has filed a complaint with the Prosecutor's Office in Dresden, accusing Habeck of defamation following allegedly damaging remarks made during a campaign event in 2024.

During the 2024 Saxony state election's final campaign event on August 30, Habeck, then a federal economics minister, reportedly made factually incorrect statements about Wagenknecht and her party. The Prosecutor's Office is looking into these claims, deeming them potential defamation, despite Habeck's argument that they were protected as critical expressions of opinion.

Throughout the controversy, Wagenknecht alleges that Habeck's remarks aimed to manipulate the campaign by spreading lies and defamation, not just insults. BSW rejects claims that it receives payment for its opinion, buys votes online, or constructs troll armies.

The police launched an investigation in November following the complaint filed by Wagenknecht and the BSW. In February, the Prosecutor's Office notified the President of the German Bundestag of their intention to proceed with the criminal case against Habeck and sought the removal of his immunity. Still, no decision on this matter has been announced.

Last week, the Bundestag rejected a request to lift Habeck's immunity, but it's unclear whether this decision is related to the same case under examination. For the investigation to progress further, Habeck's immunity must be revoked, as the Prosecutor's Office can only investigate a potential malicious slander case if immunity is lifted.

Political tensions continue to rise as Wagenknecht and Habeck grapple with legal challenges. Debates about the use and misuse of defamation laws within Germany's political landscape have gained traction, particularly when it comes to high-profile figures like Habeck. The outcome of this case may set a significant precedent for future political disputes.

The Commission, in the midst of general-news and politics, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, as the investigation into defamation allegations between Sahra Wagenknecht and Robert Habeck unfolds. This case, with potential implications in the realm of crime-and-justice, may set a precedent for future political disputes, sparking debates about the use and misuse of defamation laws within Germany's political landscape.
