Investigative Files Concerning the Murder of Senator Robert F. Kennedy
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has been actively releasing thousands of documents related to the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy as part of an interagency, systematic declassification and dissemination effort under Executive Order 14176.
Signed by President Donald Trump on January 23, 2025, the order mandates the declassification and release of files concerning the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr. Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence, announced the release of more than 10,000 records related to Senator Robert F. Kennedy's assassination at the National Archives on April 20, 2025.
The records, a combination of black and white and colored scans, are being made available through the National Archives for access by researchers and the general public. The documents from the June 12 release were not previously available electronically on the National Archives website.
These records include Robert F. Kennedy's Attorney General Files, Pre-Administration Papers, Senate Papers, Presidential Campaign Papers, Ford Press Releases, Robert F. Kennedy Tributes, and Jean Stein Personal Papers. Some documents in the releases are also from the Johnson and Ford Presidential Libraries, State Department, and CIA.
On July 21, 2025, NARA released over 230,000 pages of records related to Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination as part of the same declassification process under the executive order. This process has been described as a new "business as usual" for these files, reflecting an ongoing, coordinated effort to increase transparency and accountability.
In the May 7, 2025 records, some items are also found in other KENSALT case files, but they are separate copies. Records from this release may contain "FBI Experience" in the title and represent evidence from the FBI Los Angeles Field Office's investigation into Robert F. Kennedy's assassination. These records were sent to The FBI Experience in Washington, D.C. in July 2020 and were never displayed.
Some documents in the June 12 release of records related to Robert F. Kennedy's assassination are from the FOIA Copies, previously released under the Freedom of Information Act in 1976 and have prior redactions. Unreadable black and white pages in records from April 18, 2025, were replaced with legible color scans for improved readability and legibility.
