Investigative bodies have issued subpoenas to New York Attorney General Letitia James, according to news outlets, in connection with her probes involving Donald Trump and the National Rifle Association.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has expressed her support for Attorney General Letitia James, stating that the Trump administration should leave her alone and let her do her job. This comes amidst a legal battle between James and President Donald Trump, as well as the National Rifle Association (NRA), and a federal probe into the actions of the Attorney General's office.
In a recent update, a New York judge ordered Trump and his associates to pay more than $450 million in the lawsuit brought forth by James in 2022. The lawsuit alleges that Trump had committed fraud by inflating his net worth to secure more favorable bank loans for his company.
James is also embroiled in a case against the NRA, which was sued by her office in 2020. The lawsuit accuses the gun rights group of spending millions of dollars on its executives' personal expenses, including private jets, lavish meals, and vacations to the Bahamas. The NRA was ultimately ordered to update its policies to follow New York's nonprofit laws.
However, the Attorney General's office has faced criticism, with some claiming that James has been overly aggressive in her pursuit of cases. Governor Hochul has criticized the federal government for trying to interfere with James' pursuit of cases when there's evidence. John A. Sarcone, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of New York, has also spoken out against James, stating that her 2018 campaign promise to go after Trump was reckless, irresponsible, and unethical.
Sarcone, who is not a prosecutor by profession, was appointed as an interim U.S. attorney in March but was not appointed as the U.S. attorney when his interim appointment expired in July. His predecessor, Carla B. Freedman, currently holds the position.
Federal prosecutors have issued subpoenas to James' office, but the Attorney General's office has not confirmed the subpoenas. In response, James' office issued a statement expressing concern about any "weaponization of the justice system."
The subpoenas are related to two of James' most controversial cases, including the lawsuit against Trump and the NRA. Despite the controversy, Governor Hochul has expressed her support for James, stating that she should be allowed to do her job without interference.
