Investigative authorities storm former President Yoon's personal residence, as reported by Yonhap.
SEOUL UPDATE: South Korean authorities stormed the residence of the nation's ex-president, Yoon Suk Yeol, yesterday (Apr 30), according to Yonhap. The raid is part of a widening probe into a shaman accused of accepting extravagant presents destined for the former first lady, Kim Keon Hee.
Yoon was dealt a devastating blow earlier this month when the Constitutional Court revoked his power and perks following his disastrous Dec 3 martial law declaration. Prior to his blunder, he had been spending his days in the presidential residence. Post-dismissal, he was left with no choice but to migrate back to his long-standing home in Seoul's Seocho district.
The South Korean news agency reported that the investigation is digging deeper into suspected ties between Yoon's family and the controversial shaman, Jeon Seong-bae.
Jeon is under the microscope for receiving a diamond necklace, a pricey luxury bag, and ginseng - a coveted health elixir that can run into thousands - from a high-ranking Unification Church official. Jeon allegedly handed these luxurious gifts over to Kim.
However, Jeon denies ever delivering the $10,000 necklace, luxury bag, and valuable ginseng to Kim. Instead, he claims he lost the gifts. Local media, though, suggests that prosecutors have uncovered a text message from the Unification Church official demanding Jeon return the diamond necklace.
This investigation is aimed at determining whether the luxury items made their way to Kim and if there were any political favors traded in the process. Additionally, prosecutors are looking into Jeon's role as an advisor in the People Power Party's 2022 election networking group and potential anomalies in candidate selection.
