Putrajaya, June 4 - Malaysia rolled out the red carpet for Guinea-Bissau's President Umaro Sissoco Embalo during his three-day official visit. Embalo, stepping into Malaysian soil for the first time since his term began in February 2020, was greeted with a traditional welcome ceremony.

Upon his arrival at 9am, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim warmly received him, setting the tone for the warm relations between the two nations. The ceremony began with the AMÁ Guiné-Bissau and Negaraku anthems played in harmony, symbolizing the shared respect and friendship.

Embalo inspected a guard of honor, led by Major Mohamad Waqiyudin Abd Rahman, a nod to the strong military ties that bind the two countries. Senior government officials and diplomats were also part of the dignified event.

Post the ceremonial formalities, President Embalo signed the guest book before moving on to a bilateral meeting with Anwar. The talks centered around trade, investment, agriculture, education, and capacity building. The leaders are expected to discuss regional and international issues of mutual interest as well.

Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau have enjoyedenduring diplomatic relations since November 1974. Their bilateral relations remain strong, underpinned by cooperation on various international platforms, including the United Nations (UN), the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Guinea-Bissau amounted to RM4.1 million, with exports valued at RM4.04 million and imports at RM0.06 million.

Recently, Malaysia has been making concerted efforts to strengthen ties with Guinea-Bissau, viewing it as a strategic gateway for future trade and investment in Africa. The country's leadership encourages key Malaysian corporations like PETRONAS and FGV Holdings to seize opportunities in Guinea-Bissau and utilize it as a stepping stone for further expansion across the continent.
