Investigations carried out in Bulgaria at the behest of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine, linked to allegations of corrupt military equipment acquisitions
Ukraine Conducts Cross-Border Searches in Bulgaria to Combat Corrupt Arms Deals
Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) is continuing its investigations into corrupt arms deals, with cross-border searches in Bulgaria being a part of these efforts. The operation, which began on August 12, 2025, is being carried out at the request of Kyiv.
The searches are being conducted in several regions under the control of the National Investigation Service, with numerous investigators from various Ukrainian agencies participating. These include the National Investigation Service, the Ministry of Internal Affairs' General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime, the General Directorate of Gendarmerie, Special Operations and Counter-Terrorism, and the Supreme Prosecution Office of Cassation, which is supervising the searches and seizures of property.
The searches are being carried out in homes and offices of arms dealers across Bulgaria, with the operation involving multiple cities. So far, no one has been detained as part of the operation.
The investigations are in connection with an investigation into corruption in Ukraine related to the sale of weapons at inflated prices. Although the Polish company Alfa is mentioned in Russian fraud cases, no direct link in the search results to the Ukrainian arms purchases case involving Alfa was found.
The operation showcases Ukraine’s commitment to collaborate internationally against corruption in defense procurement. However, further details might be subject to ongoing investigations and restricted disclosures.
As the investigations continue, more information may become available regarding the direct involvement of Alfa in weapon purchases corruption or further Bulgaria-related developments. For now, the latest information indicates that the searches in Bulgaria are a significant step in Ukraine’s ongoing fight against corruption in its weapons procurement processes.
