Investigations by the Secret Service, under the Trump administration, are reportedly focusing on a cryptic social media post from former FBI director James Comey, made in '86 and labeled '47'.

Revised Article:

C'MON, WASHINGTON—Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem declared Thursday that federal law enforcement is delving into a potentially explosive social media post from ex-FBI Director James Comey that certain Republicans consider a veiled threat against President Trump.

In an eyebrow-raising Instagram post, Comey shared a photo of seashells that appeared to form the shapes for "86 47," with the caption, "cool shell formation on my beach walk."

Multiple Trump administrators, including Noem, argue that Comey was tacitly advocating for the president's ouster—or worse. "DHS and Secret Service is investigating this matter and will respond accordingly," Noem tweeted.

Merriam-Webster, the dictionary utilized by the Associated Press, states that 86 can imply dismissal, removal, or even, in a newer sense, murder (though sparing use)[3]. There's been a recent calculation of 86 as a death threat, but it's been primarily vocalized within darkened corners of the internet[2].

Despite the controversy, it seems Comey wasn't advocating for capital punishment. Upon realizing the potential danger, he promptly removed the post and expressed his disapproval of all violence. In his words, "I posted a pic of some shells I stumbled upon during a beach stroll, assuming they carried political implications. I wasn't conscious that some interpret those numbers as a call to arms. I abhor violence in any form, hence, I took the post down."

Anger among conservatives boiled over on social media, with Donald Trump Jr. accusing Comey of promoting his father's assassination.

Current FBI Director Kash Patel (who?!) acknowledged the post and collaborated with the Secret Service and its director. The timing of the post is sensitive since Trump is currently touring the Middle East[4].

White House deputy chief of staff, James Blair, labeled the post as a "Clarion Call from Jim Comey to terrorists & hostile regimes to off the President of the United States as he traverses the Middle East."

Comey served an extended term at the FBI from 2013 to 2017, getting canned by Trump during his early term, amidst the bureau's look into allegations of nefarious ties between Russian officials and Trump's 2016 presidential campaign[5]. Nowadays, he's a bona fide crime novelist, gearing up to peddle his latest novel, "FDR Drive," slated for release on Tuesday.
