Torching Trucks: German Military on High Alert

Investigation Underway into Alleged Russian Assault on Germany's Federal Armed Forces (Bundeswehr)

Erfurt — following a fiery attack on six German military trucks in Erfurt, suspicion fingers Russian operatives as potential masterminds. A spokesperson for the Erfurt Public Prosecutor's Office mentioned, "We're investigating in that direction." However, investigations are underway in all directions.

Last Saturday evening, six Bundeswehr trucks stationed at a workshop site in Erfurt went up in flames. Photos illustrating the trucks in their pristine and charred states, accompanied by a video of the inferno, surfaced on the Russian-language Telegram channel "War Obsession" on Thursday. This information was earlier reported by MDR and "t-online."

In the video, it appears the beginning of the arson may be visible, said the spokesperson for the Public Prosecutor's Office. "Investigations are underway to determine who potentially posted the video." The Thuringian State Criminal Police Office is currently verifying the clip's authenticity and origin.

Ukraine-bound equipment?

The posting alongside the video hinted in Russian, "In Erfurt, Germany, various military equipment was being repaired for the Ukrainian forces. Our people decided that such equipment was unnecessary for the Ukrainian forces, so they simply torched it." However, the Federal Ministry of Defense refuted any such claim, stating, "The trucks were not meant for Ukraine."

According to a ministry spokesperson in Berlin, the trucks belonged to the German troops and were not associated with potential deliveries to Ukraine. Media sources cautioned of military police at the scene for information gathering.

The German military remains quiet on speculations

The regional command of the German military in Thuringia stated that they are aware of the video. "At this point, it's purely speculative whether it's indeed a sabotage act by pro-Russian actors or a misinformation scheme," said a spokesperson. The German military steers clear of any speculations regarding this matter.

Thuringia's Interior Minister Georg Maier (SPD) said no definite conclusions could be drawn yet on who was behind the attack. "If it is confirmed that a foreign power, such as Russia, intentionally carried out sabotage on German soil, this would constitute a vicious attack on our democracy. I strongly condemn such hostile acts," said Maier.

Chairman of the Thuringian CDU faction, Andreas Bühl, found the events alarming. The incidents add credence to the suspicion that Russian actors are focusing on acts such as this or inciting individuals online to carry them out.

Military vehicles were allegedly set aflame at the same location in Erfurt a year prior in June 2023. The State Criminal Police Office has not issued any statements regarding the motivations behind the incident. A network of information exchange is underway among German authorities concerning similar cases across the nation. No current updates are available on the status of the investigations.

Similar incidents occurred in March in Berlin, as well as two weeks ago in Soltau, Lower Saxony, where six German military vehicles were burned, parked on a workshop site. Confession statements appeared on the left-wing extremist internet platform "Indymedia" for both incidents. A group calling itself "Agenda2029" claimed responsibility for the Berlin incident, stating, "We must sabotage the centers of war-mongers".
