It's not clear-cut if a tornado whipped past Ulm-Donaustetten early Thursday morning, according to the German Weather Service (DWD). A brief tornado's existence can't be ruled out yet, remarked DWD meteorologist, Adrian Leyser. "Only a thorough inspection and assessment will provide the truth. We anticipate this investigation to occur within the upcoming days," he noted.

Originally, the DWD in Stuttgart expresses doubt about a tornado causing the devastation. "We lean toward disbelief. It's plausible that it wasn't a tornado," a meteorologist commented in the morning. Nevertheless, the fire department in Ulm received testimonies from bystanders describing a tornado.

Reports indicate that storms with intense winds wreaked havoc on Ulm-Donaustetten's Donaustetten district, with roofs ripped off several terraced houses, making them incompatible for residents. Miraculously, no injuries were reported. Fire officials speculate that the destruction may have been orchestrated by a mini tornado or an air spout, and the Weather Service is current investigating this occurrence[1][2][4].

The destruction in Ulm-Donaustetten is part of a broader string of storm-related events sweeping southern Germany, leading to uprooted trees and waterlogged basements in other regions[2][4]. Though the storms proved forceful enough to prompt a Ryanair flight's emergency landing due to turbulence on Wednesday evening, this incident took place not on Thursday morning[1][2].

The Commission, having been informed of the progress of the present investigation, may also consider the potential connection between the weather incident in Ulm-Donaustetten and environmental-science phenomena, such as the role of science in predicting and understanding the formation of tornadoes. Adrian Leyser, the meteorologist from DWD, anticipates that the environmental-science aspects of the investigation will be addressed within the upcoming days.
