Investigation of Laura Dahlmeier temporarily halted - Investigation of Laura Dahlmeier's whereabouts halted.
Laura Dahlmeier, a renowned German biathlete and double Olympic champion, tragically lost her life on July 28, 2025, during a mountaineering expedition on Laila Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram range.
The accident occurred around noon at an altitude of approximately 5,700 meters (18,700 feet) in the Hushe Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan region. Dahlmeier was climbing with her rope partner, Marina Eva, when a rockfall struck them.
Eva immediately called for emergency help and managed to descend to base camp with the assistance of rescuers. An international rescue operation was launched, including rescue teams and standby military helicopters. However, bad weather and poor visibility prevented a timely extraction, and the recovery operation was ultimately called off on the evening of July 29.
Local rescuers, including mountaineers and porters, raced against time to reach Laura despite ongoing rain and the risk of falling rocks. The remote location and adverse conditions made the rescue effort extremely difficult.
Laura Dahlmeier, born in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1993, was well-known in Germany for her achievements in biathlon. She won two Olympic gold medals and seven world championship titles before retiring from sports in 2019. Since then, she had undertaken numerous climbing and mountaineering tours.
The incident drew significant international attention due to Dahlmeier's status as a celebrated athlete beyond the winter sports community. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and fans during this difficult time.
