Investigation leads to the detention of two individuals linked to an ambulance service, following a series of six fatalities in the county of Wiltshire.

In a significant development, two employees of the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) have been arrested as part of a major investigation into six deaths in Wiltshire.

The investigation, led by Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker, began with an initial report made in 2023. In March this year, a 59-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. An individual in his 30s from West Wiltshire was arrested on suspicion of six counts of gross negligence manslaughter and four counts of ill-treatment or wilful neglect by a care worker, in June 2024.

Following the arrests, both individuals have been released on bail as the enquiries of the investigation remain ongoing. The SWASFT promptly initiated an internal investigation once concerns were raised and, as a result, two members of staff were suspended. One of the suspended individuals is no longer working at the trust. The suspended staff members were immediately relieved of all duties, including the treatment of patients.

The trust aims to reassure people that this is an isolated situation and there is no ongoing risk to patients. The internal investigation resulted in a prompt police referral. The names of the arrested individuals, apart from the man in his 30s, have not been publicly specified in the available information.

The South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust has not provided any new information regarding the ongoing investigation or the specific charges against the arrested individuals. The trust, however, has stated that it is fully cooperating with the police and will continue to do so throughout the investigation.

The arrests have caused a stir in the community, with many expressing shock and concern. The trust, in response, has emphasised its commitment to providing the highest standard of care and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of its individual patients. As the investigation continues, the trust and the police will work together to seek the truth and bring any culpable parties to justice.
