Investigation Launched in Haute-Savoie Following Discovery of "Free Palestine" Graffiti on Jewish Tourists' Vehicles
In the picturesque resort town of Châtel, Haute-Savoie, an investigation has been launched following a series of acts of vandalism against Orthodox Jewish families. On August 20, 2022, at least nine vehicles belonging to these families were marked with orange paint, bearing the message "Free Palestine."
The Orthodox Jewish community in Châtel, primarily composed of Britons, has been vacationing in the resort for several years. However, this year's visit was marred by incidents that the community's leader, Yossef Murciano, considers to be anti-Semitic.
Murciano emphasized that the vacationers' cars were targeted because they are Jewish. The community's visible clothing and distinctive signs may have explained why they were singled out. He also condemned the "Free Palestine" inscriptions on kosher meal trays by Iberia airline as an anti-Semitic act.
The specific perpetrators of these vandalistic acts have not been identified or named in available reports. The investigation, opened by the gendarmerie of Abondance, aims to find the author or authors of the tags on the kosher meal trays and the cars.
The mayor of Châtel, Nicolas Rubin, reported the incident, stating that the Jewish community doesn't ask anything of anyone, doesn't disturb anyone, and was on vacation at the time of the incident. He condemned the acts, noting that they do not reflect the values of the town.
The Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions (Crif) Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes has also condemned the "disgusting acts" committed against Jewish families in the vacation resort. The council emphasized that such acts have no place in society and called for solidarity with the affected families.
The Savoyard mayor echoed these sentiments, stating that the acts were part of a strategy using the pretext of the 'fight for the Palestinian cause' to target Jews. He emphasized that these acts are not acceptable in any context.
This incident follows previous incidents of graffiti and vehicle vandalism in Châtel. The facts were reported to the authorities, and an investigation is ongoing. At 6:43 PM, the prosecutor's office confirmed the ongoing investigation.
The community in Châtel continues to vacation in the resort, hoping for a peaceful and enjoyable stay. They remain resilient in the face of adversity, determined to enjoy their time in the beautiful Alps.
