Berlin streets, infamous for their vibrant charm, hide a darker truth. Just recently, an appalling racist attack left a 24-year-old woman victimized, her dignity shattered and spirits battered in Berlin's multicultural Marzahn district.
According to police reports, the attack began with a woman, no identities disclosed yet, hurling racial slurs at the 24-year-old wearing a hijab. In tow were her two companions - a 22-year-old friend and a 27-year-old male. Witnessing the commotion, the assailant lunged at the victim, spitting venom on her and striking her with a shoe. The victim, trying to capture the incident on her phone, was violently snatched from her bag and tossed to the ground by the attacker. The 22-year-old suffered verbal assault too as she tried to intervene, but the 27-year-old's efforts were in vain.
The attacker, caught in the act but unrelenting, attempted to strike the 22-year-old with her shoe. However, the quick-witted 22-year-old managed to evade the attack. With the deed done, the attacker vanished into the crowds of Marzahn. The 24-year-old sustained minor injuries but declined medical attention.
Fuelling the flames of controversy, the state protection department of Berlin's police covenant takes charge of the investigation.
