Breaking: Indian Aviation Regulator Enacts Inspections on Boeing 787s Post Air India Catastrophe

After the heart-wrenching incident involving an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that took 270 lives, the aviation regulator in India sprang into action. On Saturday, the aviation minister announced that all Boeing 787 Dreamliners operated by Indian carriers must undergo mandatory inspections[1].

In a press conference held in New Delhi, the aviation minister added that the investigations were probing all potential causes for the disaster[1]. Following this announcement, the aviation regulator ordered the airline to perform additional checks on its Boeing 787-8/9 aircraft equipped with GEnx engines. The checks include assessments of certain take-off parameters, electronic engine control tests, and engine fuel-related checks[1].

The aviation regulator didn't stop there; they also mandated an extended surveillance of the 34 Boeing 787 planes in the Indian fleet[1]. Although eight aircraft have already been inspected, the regulator is prioritizing the inspections of all aircraft with immediate urgency[1].

Despite the tragic accident, there's still no word on whether government officials will involve themselves in the inspections[1]. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, with 242 people on board bound for Britain's Gatwick Airport, took off only to lose altitude seconds later and crash into buildings below.

Air India operates 33 Boeing 787s, while rival airline IndiGo has one[2]. IndiGo did not respond to a request for comment when approached[2]. Meanwhile, Air India is carrying out the safety checks directed by the Indian regulator. The airline added that these checks could lead to higher turnaround times and potential delays on certain long-haul routes[2].

India's complicated history with aviation tragedies and the previous struggle to rebuild its aviation sector loom large in light of this catastrophe[4]. The Tata Group took over Air India from the Indian government in 2022, with Tata's chairman stating they would work to understand what transpired in the crash[4].

The Indian government has taken immediate steps to investigate the disaster and will release its findings within three months[1]. In the meantime, family members and loved ones anxiously wait for bodies to be identified and released.
