Investigation in Bathinda's reported 'sexual assault and homicide' continues, as no suspects have been exonerated, according to the authorities.
A special investigation team (SIT) in Bathinda, led by Superintendent of Police Narinder Singh, has expressed that no individual has been exonerated in the alleged rape and murder of a 19-year-old student from March. The deceased, a student at a private college in Chandigarh, went missing under mysterious circumstances on March 9 and was later recovered from the Kotla branch canal near Maur town on March 12.
Six individuals, including Mukul Mittal, known to be in a relationship with the victim, have been accused in the case. His parents, Ravi and Dimple Mittal, along with his uncle Raj Kumar Mittal, Mukul's friends Raghav Singla and Karan Bansal, have also been implicated in the crime.
Despite the arrests, the SIT has stated that the investigation is still ongoing and a chargesheet will be filed imminently. The police have yet to uncover solid evidence to convict the accused of murder or sexual abuse. In the absence of concrete evidence, chemical and forensic analyses have revealed no injury marks on the victim’s body, suggesting that drowning might have been the cause of death. However, there is currently no evidence to prove that Mukul or anyone else was responsible for throwing the victim into the canal.
The Bathinda police administration suspended Maur station house officer Manjit Singh for dereliction of duty in handling the case, following a complaint from the victim's family. Public uproar in Maur prompted authorities to establish two SITs to investigate the matter thoroughly.
The Enrichment Data indicates that the investigation is almost complete, but there is yet to be a chargesheet filed. The primary focus of the SIT remains on Mukul Mittal, who reportedly lived in the victim's neighborhood.
The special investigation team (SIT) in Bathinda continues to investigate the case of the murdered student, with Mukul Mittal, a neighbor and alleged boyfriend of the victim, still a prime suspect despite no concrete evidence linking him to the crime. In the meantime, general news outlets and political discussions are focusing on the slow progress of the case, with many wondering if justice will ever be served in this tragic incident. Additionally, the suspension of Manjit Singh, the Maur station house officer, due to dereliction of duty has raised concerns about crime-and-justice in the region, with calls for increased accountability and transparency in law enforcement.
