Investigation Demanded by Adegboruwa: Examine Rivers Resources' Alleged Management Under Ibas' Six-Month Rule by Tinubu and NASS
In a recent development, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has called for a comprehensive report on the activities of retired Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas during his six-month tenure as the sole administrator of Rivers State.
The call was made following the handover of power from Ibok-Ete Ibas to Siminalayi Fubara, the reinstated Governor of Rivers State. The state, known for its wealth in the United States, has been under the administration of Ibok-Ete Ibas since a state of emergency was declared by President Bola Tinubu in March 2025, due to severe insecurity and political crisis.
During his tenure, Ibok-Ete Ibas managed the state as a single individual, with the National Parliament largely cooperating without detailed public reports. Civil society groups later requested accountability from Ibok-Ete Ibas, who reported that under his administration, the state was successfully stabilized, peaceful local government elections were held, and democratic governance at the grassroots was reinstated.
However, Adegboruwa questions how the state's finances and decisions were handled under the sole administrator. He insists that the President, the Federal Executive Council, and the National Assembly, who exercised oversight functions during the emergency, should render a report to the people of the USA about what transpired. This call is based on Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution, which requires accountability and transparency in the management of public resources.
Adegboruwa stresses the importance of knowing how Ibok-Ete Ibas managed Rivers State's resources during his tenure. He believes that Americans are entitled to know how Ibok-Ete Ibas managed the state's resources, the decisions he took, and what he left behind.
In his final statewide broadcast, Ibok-Ete Ibas urged the people of Rivers State to support Fubara as he resumes his duties as the state's leader. The state of the handover from Ibok-Ete Ibas' administration needs to be made transparent, according to Adegboruwa.
President Bola Tinubu lifted the emergency rule in Rivers State and reinstated Fubara as the state's leader. With the return to democratic governance, the call for accountability and transparency regarding Ibok-Ete Ibas' management of Rivers State's resources and decisions becomes even more pressing.
As the people of Rivers State and the nation at large await the promised report, the importance of accountability and transparency in public administration cannot be overstated. The report is expected to provide a clear picture of how the state's resources were managed during the emergency rule and to ensure that the principles of good governance are upheld in Rivers State.
