Investigation Continues in Grefrath/Dortmund: Additional Inquiries Based on Allegations of Murder Without Adequate Anaesthetic in the Viersen District
Investigations Ongoing at Grefrath Farm Amid Allegations of Animal Welfare Violations and Tax Fraud
A farm in Grefrath, North Rhine-Westphalia, has been the subject of investigations since September 10, 2025, following tips from an animal rights organization. The investigations were initiated to look into allegations of animal welfare violations and tax fraud.
Over 50 personnel from the Circular Police Authority Viersen and the Public Prosecutor's Office Dortmund were involved in the search. The Central Office for the Prosecution of Environmental Crime (Zentralstelle für Umweltkriminalität) took over the investigations on September 17, 2025.
Suspicions arose that sheep and cattle were slaughtered on the farm without effective stunning, causing significant pain reactions. Three suspects, aged 30, 62, and 64, are being investigated for suspected offenses under the Animal Welfare Act, including professional forgery of documents.
In addition to the animal welfare concerns, the investigations also found indications of tax irregularities. The head of the Central Office for Environmental Crime in North Rhine-Westphalia, which is handling the investigations, is Senior Public Prosecutor Christian Petlalski.
The executions of search warrants took place on September 22, 2025. The public can provide tips regarding the allegations, including anonymously, from September 22, 2025, via a specially set up tipster portal of the Circular Police Authority Viersen until September 25, 2025.
The meat from the farm was sold while circumventing the relevant authorities. The public can provide information to the ZeUK NRW (Senior Public Prosecutor Kilimann and Senior Public Prosecutor Britta Affeldt) at [email protected] and 0173-2098374. The Press Office of the Circular Police Authority Viersen can be contacted at 02162/377-1191 and [email protected].
The ZeUK NRW was established based on the coalition agreement of the state government of NRW at the end of 2023. The investigations into the farm in Grefrath are a testament to the importance of the work they do in protecting both animals and the environment.
