Investigating potential solutions to lessen the threat of floods in Birmingham by the Environment Agency
In an effort to safeguard people and communities from the threat of flooding, the Environment Agency has initiated a new scheme called the Bourn Flood Risk Management scheme. This initiative aims to minimize flooding from the River Bourn, which is particularly susceptible to rapid flooding, especially during intense storms.
The proposed scheme involves creating flood storage areas around the River Bourn. Three potential sites under consideration for this new flood storage project are Manor Farm Park, Weoley Hill Park, and Valley Parkway in the Bournville area. However, it is important to note that no decisions have been made regarding the concept design of the Bourn Flood Risk Management scheme.
When the flood risk isn't high, these parks will operate as normal. The impacts of such a scheme on these parks, their ecology, and access during and after flood events are yet to be determined and will require further study and consultation.
Suzanne Ward, Environment Manager for the Birmingham area, has emphasized the importance of community involvement in the process. The Environment Agency is committed to working with the community and has already hosted an open drop-in session at Weoley Village Hall in January. Further sessions and information events are set to take place in the future for the community to discuss their views and concerns about the scheme.
It is crucial to address the flood risk issue, as 200 residential properties and 100 businesses in the Bournville and Stirchley area are at risk of flooding. Past flooding incidents in the area, such as those in 2008, 2012, and 2016, underscore the need for effective flood management strategies.
With anticipated climate change impacts and an increasing urban population, there is a likelihood of an increase in both the frequency and impact of flood events in the future. Therefore, it is essential to take proactive measures to mitigate the risks associated with flooding.
For official and specific information regarding the Bourn Flood Risk Management scheme and its proposed flood storage areas affecting Manor Farm Park, Weoley Hill Park, and Valley Parkway, I recommend consulting Environment Agency or local council publications regarding flood risk and development plans in Birmingham, Bournville Village Trust or Birmingham City Council flood risk management consultations, and public consultation documents or planning applications relating to the flood storage scheme.
