Emio, also known as "The Smiling Man," is a fictional character depicted as a notorious serial killer who leaves a haunting symbol—a smiling paper bag—over the heads of his victims, symbolizing "a smile that lasts forever." The game's story revolves around the dark murder mystery of a junior high student, Eisuke Sasaki, whose death eerily echoes these old unsolved cases linked to the Emio legend.
The urban legend suggests that Emio was responsible for a string of murders 18 years ago, characterized by his disturbing modus operandi. As a member of the Utsugi Detective Agency, players investigate this recent murder and attempt to uncover whether Emio truly exists or if a new killer is imitating this notorious figure.
The demo for Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club is divided into three separate chapters, with the Prologue and Chapter 1 available to play now. Chapter 2 will be available on Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. PT, and Chapter 3 will follow on Aug. 27 at the same time. Each additional demo chapter becomes playable at the scheduled times after download.
Players should note that the demo requires an internet-connected Nintendo SwitchTM system to receive chapter updates. Additionally, downloading the demo closer to the launch date will provide all available chapters at the time of download. Save data from the demo will also be transferred if the full game is purchased.
