Investec Champions Cup Star Team - Fourth Round Selection

Guts and Glory in the European Rugby Frenzy

The Stormers and the Sharks found themselves in a nail-biting final round of pool action, battling for survival in France, only to be knocked out by Racing 92 and Bordeaux-Begles respectively. The Capetonians displayed incredible determination in their 31-22 defeat at Paris La Defense Arena, while the Sharks were brutally defeated 66-12 at Stade Chaban-Delmas.

As a result, the Stormers will see no further action in European competitions this season, and the Sharks will return to the Challenge Cup, a title they won last year. Meanwhile, the rampaging Bulls side smashed Stade Francais 48-7 at Loftus Versfeld to qualify for the Challenge Cup playoffs. Our team consists of no less than 12 Bulls players, with a pair of Stormers and a solitary Sharks star completing the lineup.

Let's dive into the top performers from the triumphant Bulls side who swept aside Stade Francais:

15: Devon Williams (Bulls)

His maturity and gutsy play made heads turn. His first touch sparked a brilliant break that ended with the Bulls' second try, and he effortlessly made those around him look good with deft touches.

14: Sebastian de Klerk (Bulls)

Showed off his exceptional ball control, retaining early, contestable kicks, and contributing to the Bulls' points tally with a grubber leading up to Hanekom's try and a touch-finder that dampened the spirits of Stade Francais.

13: Jurenzo Julius (Sharks)

Key to the Sharks' hot start, his skillful offloading led to Siya Masuku's try, and he made strong runs in the build-up to Hakeem Kunene's try.

12: Harold Vorster (Bulls)

Beyond his brutal, straight running over the gainline, the veteran demonstrated solid defensive efforts, including a vital tackle on Thibaut Motassi and a turnover that enabled Hanekom to score.

11: Sergeal Petersen (Bulls)

A standout on both sides of the ball. He made two electrifying line breaks, provided a skillful try assist for Williams with a deft grubber, and won a crucial breakdown penalty shortly after the hour mark.

10: Boeta Chamberlain (Bulls)

Step up to the plate? Chamberlain did just that when he came on for an injured Johan Goosen after 28 minutes. He delivered a commanding performance that saw him score a try, kick two conversions, and slot a penalty goal for a 12-point haul.

9: Herschel Jantjies (Stormers)

A Super-sub injecting life into the Stormers' attack, his speedy running and stinging tackles changed the complexion of the game. He scored a try and set up another to help the Capetonians fight back.

8: Cameron Hanekom (Bulls) - Player of the Week

A blossoming talent who displayed his full arsenal of skills in his Man of the Match performance. He delivered outstanding turnover performances at a maul on his 5m line, at a steal in the 36th minute, and a jackal in the 56th minute. His offload led to Ruan Vermaak's try, he scored a great try of his own, and he was a terror on defense, making a match-high 14 tackles.

7: Elrigh Louw (Bulls)

Troubled the Stade Francais players all day long. He dominated the gainline battle and charged down two kicks. A 5m tap try, showcasing his immense power, was the highlight of his day.

6: Marcell Coetzee (Bulls)

Class is indeed permanent as Coetzee proved with his 50th cap for the Bulls. He broke tackles with his strong carries, wrestled his way to a maul turnover, and made 11 tackles.

5: Ruan Nortje (Bulls)

A fantastic return after a two-month injury layoff. He ran the lineout like a clock, stole one on the visitors' throw, and won a turnover on the deck. His importance to the Bulls' lineout was evident as their performance suffered after his substitution.

4: Ruan Vermaak (Bulls)

Physical, powerful, and productive, Vermaak put Stade Francais' lineout under pressure, poached one against the throw, and added flair to his style with a beautiful flicking offload and a wonderful Try.

3: Neethling Fouche (Stormers)

As dominant as Wilco Louw was at scrum time, Fouche matched him by winning three penalties in the set-piece and outworked him in open play, making a joint-team-high 14 tackles.

2: Johan Grobbelaar (Bulls)

His laser-accurate lineout throwing separated him from his competitors and proved crucial in the Bulls' scrum domination.

1: Gerhard Steenekamp (Bulls)

Played his part in the scrum domination, made a few valuable carries, and was an active, roaming defender.
