The Krasnodar region in Russia, a popular vacation spot on the Black Sea, is currently under a state of emergency due to severe flooding caused by heavy rains, tornadoes, and storms that began around August 3-4, 2025.

The flooding has affected about 70 residential areas and 34 homes in villages such as Defanovka, Moldavanovka, Novomikhailovsky, and Lermontovo. Multiple people have been reported missing, and the Shapsukho River has overflowed, causing infrastructure damage including a collapsed bridge in the Tuapse district and extensive flooding in towns including Goryachy Klyuch and along the Black Sea coast near Sochi and Tuapse.

Authorities have mobilized emergency services, deploying over 150 personnel, 48 specialists, and 44 rescue units to assist with evacuations and flood response. Temporary accommodation centers have been established, such as a school facility in Novomikhailovsky village, to shelter displaced residents and tourists. Evacuations involved rescues assisted by fire trucks and ropes because of strong water currents and tornado activity at night.

The state of emergency was officially declared in the Tuapse district by the regional governor, Veniamin Kondratyev, who made the announcement on Telegram. Due to ongoing heavy precipitation and rising river levels, authorities have issued storm warnings for the Kuban region, anticipating worsening conditions.

In addition to flooding, a mudslide has also disrupted local transportation, and a dilapidated bridge in the village of Lermontovo was washed away. Rescue teams have been distributing water to people in the affected areas, and 40 tourists were evacuated from the region.

Relief efforts are continuing as authorities work to address the challenges posed by the combined threats of flooding, landslides, and tornadoes. Travelers are advised to exercise caution due to the potential for additional flooding and landslides in the days ahead.

Environmental scientists are closely monitoring the aftermath of the severe weather events in the Krasnodar region, particularly the rising river levels and heavy precipitation. In order to mitigate the impacts on both humans and the environment, further efforts are needed in the field of environmental science, focusing on flood management and disaster response strategies.

The meteorological conditions in the Kuban region show no signs of abating, with continuous weather changes causing ongoing flooding and complications to rescue and relief efforts. As such, it becomes crucial to have accurate and timely weather forecasts, allowing emergency services to make well-informed decisions during this critical period.
