Intruder storms Tour de France finale, apprehended by law enforcement
In rainy conditions on Wednesday afternoon, an unidentified man attempted to cycle across the finish line of Tour de France stage 17 in Valence, France. The incident, which occurred on a part of the course lined with barriers for the final few kilometers, was not shown on television but was captured by photographers.
The man, who was dressed in a Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale jersey, was arrested by a member of the Compagnies Republicaines de Securite (CRS) when the peloton was less than 2km from the finish. He was bundled off the road and seemed to be hurt in the incident.
The motives for the stunt are still not clear, but it appears the man was attempting to mimic or infiltrate the competition. This is the second time in a week that the Tour de France has faced people getting on the finish of the race course, with the previous incident occurring near the finish line in Toulouse on stage 11.
Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) won the bunch sprint at the time of the incident. The Tour's organizers, ASO, did not comment on the incident.
Legally, the man was sentenced to an eight-month suspended prison sentence and banned from entering any sports venue for five years. He was convicted of "entering a sports competition area and disrupting the competition, refusing to comply, and assaulting a person in a position of public authority." He was also ordered to pay €500 in damages to the officer who stopped him. The man had three prior convictions, but no further personal or specific motive details were reported.
This unauthorised intrusion caused a dramatic disruption just before the stage was won by Jonathan Milan, highlighting the importance of security measures in place during major sporting events.
