Interstate 29 reopens from South Dakota to Grand Forks, remains closed to the north

A severe blizzard forced the full closure of Interstate 29 across North Dakota earlier this week. The National Weather Service had warned of dangerous conditions in the Red River Valley, leading to travel bans and heavy penalties for violations. The highway has since reopened after days of disruption.

The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for the Red River Valley starting Thursday morning. It remained in effect until 6 PM, covering much of the region with heavy snow and high winds. As a result, authorities shut down the entire stretch of Interstate 29 through North Dakota.

Drivers were strictly prohibited from using the closed road due to life-threatening conditions. Those caught ignoring the ban faced fines of up to $250. The restrictions aimed to prevent accidents and strandings in near-zero visibility.

By December 18, 2025, conditions improved enough for the highway to reopen. The cleared route now allows travel from South Dakota all the way to Grand Forks.

The reopening of Interstate 29 marks the end of a brief but intense shutdown caused by the blizzard. Travel restrictions have been lifted, and normal traffic flow has resumed. Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions for any further risks.
