Maxime Grousset Sets European Record and Wins Gold in 100m Butterfly at World Championships

Maxime Grousset, a French swimming sensation, made history at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore by setting a new European record in the 100m butterfly and clinching the gold medal.

Grousset, who took the lead at the start of the race, completed the event in a time of 49.62 seconds, a performance that places him third in the all-time global rankings, behind only American Caeleb Dressel. His fast first 50 meters of 22.80 seconds demonstrated his capacity to maintain speed in the second half of the race.

The 28-year-old swimmer faced stiff competition from Swiss swimmer Noë Ponti, who finished the event in a time of 49 seconds. However, Grousset held off Ponti to secure the victory.

Grousset's win marks his third world title overall, having also won the 50m butterfly at the same 2025 event. He has been a leading figure in sprint butterfly events for several years, with his first world title coming in 2023 in Fukuoka, Japan.

Despite missing out on the Olympics last summer, Grousset has at least three medals from the Singapore Championships. Already crowned on Monday in the 50m butterfly, he climbed onto the podium for the second time of the day after the 4x100m mixed relay, where he was paired with Wattel, Le Goff, and Gastaldello to secure the third place. A fourth medal may await him on August 3rd in the 4x100m medley relay.

The French Swimming Federation’s national technical director described Grousset's performance as "racing like a boss," indicating his strong competitive mindset and execution under pressure. Breaking the 50-second barrier in the 100m butterfly marks a new level for European swimmers, positioning him as a key figure to watch in future World Championships and Olympic competitions.

Grousset will participate in the 4x100m mixed relay event in the second event of the evening, aiming to continue his impressive run at the World Championships. His recent performances suggest continued competitiveness on the international stage, particularly in sprint butterfly events (50m and 100m).

In summary, Maxime Grousset’s European record in the 100m butterfly and multiple world titles reflect his elite status in sprint butterfly events, and his trajectory points toward further high-level performances in upcoming international meets.
