International resolution mandating a pause in armed conflict
The Gaza Strip, a small coastal region between Israel and Egypt with a population of over 2 million Palestinians, has been embroiled in a conflict since 2023. This conflict resolution began on October 7, 2023, when terrorists from Hamas, a Palestinian organisation that controls the Gaza Strip, attacked Israel, killing many people and taking more than 250 hostages.
The Gaza Strip, which is largely dependent on food supplies from abroad, has been facing a severe crisis due to Israel blocking the entry of food and medicine into the region. This blockade, combined with the ongoing conflict, has resulted in tens of thousands of civilian deaths and many thousands more facing hunger.
The United Nations (UNO), an organisation consisting of 193 countries aiming to achieve common goals such as securing peace and protecting human rights, has been closely involved in the conflict. The Security Council of the United Nations, which has 15 members, has been discussing a plan for a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict.
The plan, called a resolution, is considered binding, meaning all parties involved in the conflict are supposed to adhere to it. The plan involves three steps: ending the fighting, the release of Israeli hostages, and the withdrawal of Israeli soldiers from the Gaza Strip.
Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip and uses violence to fight for a Palestinian state and against Israel, has stated that it is ready to discuss the plan for a ceasefire. However, the Israeli government has stated that a ceasefire cannot occur until Hamas is completely defeated.
Despite the support of fourteen of the fifteen members of the Security Council, Russia has abstained from agreeing to the plan for a ceasefire. The United Nations reports that many thousands of people have been killed by Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip, and the Palestinian authorities claim that more than 37,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza war.
It is crucial that a peaceful resolution to the conflict is found as soon as possible, to prevent further loss of life and suffering for the people of the Gaza Strip. The international community must continue to work towards a ceasefire and a lasting peace in the region.
