According to our latest report, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) are escalating their partnership to ensure secure, regulated, and well-managed migration while strengthening strategic diaspora connections.

During a familiarization visit to NiDCOM's Headquarters in Abuja, IOM's Chief of Mission in Nigeria, Dimanche Sharon, expressed admiration for the benefits of secure migration during a meeting with Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa. Sharon praised NiDCOM's significant strides in diaspora engagement and migration management, noting Nigeria's outstanding influence in Africa's migration sphere.

"Migration, when the right measures are in place, is a powerful engine for sustainable development. We acknowledge the necessity and importance of the Nigerian diaspora and their vital contributions, specifically in the form of remittances, which account for the highest percentage in sub-Saharan Africa," she asserted.

Sharon underlined IOM's readiness to intensify their partnership with NiDCOM in areas that will further augment the government's efforts and keep the promise of safe migration alive. The 2022 remittance data she revealed points to Nigeria receiving $20.1 billion, representing 38% of Sub-Saharan Africa's total, demonstrating the significance of the diaspora's role in the country's development.

IOM and NiDCOM have been actively involved in the safe return and reintegration of stranded Nigerian nationals, especially during humanitarian crises.

Appreciating the visit and reaffirming NiDCOM's commitment to the collaboration, Dabiri-Erewa expressed interest in crucial points that require immediate attention and attention, such as:

"Reviewing and implementing Nigeria's Diaspora Policy, capacity development and training opportunities for NiDCOM personnel, study tours to boost institutional learning and exchange, joint awareness campaigns on the hazards of irregular migration, and staying updated with the Standing Committee on Diaspora Matters," she highlighted.

Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that migration should be treated as a developmental issue and expressed optimism that the union with IOM would continue to deliver positive outcomes for Nigerians both domestically and internationally.
