International Olympic Committee allows participation of Russian athletes in the Winter Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has made a significant decision regarding the participation of Russian athletes in the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics. Following an executive meeting in Milan, it was decided that Russian athletes will compete under a neutral flag.

This decision comes amidst a series of sanctions against Russia due to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The same restrictions also apply to athletes from Russia's ally, Belarus.

The IOC's decision, however, does not extend to all winter sports. The International Biathlon Union has stated that neutral athletes will not be allowed to compete, citing the external appearance of carrying a weapon as a particular sensitivity. On the other hand, ski mountaineering allows Russians to participate.

The international federations for bobsleigh, skeleton, and luge have banned Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing on the Cortina ice track. In contrast, the International Skating Union allows Russians to compete in figure skating, speed skating, and short track under certain conditions.

The world governing bodies for these sports have justified their decisions based on the scandal of state-sponsored doping at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. As a result, Russian athletes were only allowed to compete under certain conditions at the 2018 Pyeongchang and 2022 Beijing Games.

Russia's success in winter sports makes them one of the most successful winter sports nations in Olympic history. However, they will not be allowed to participate in team events such as ice hockey and curling at the Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo Games. Furthermore, medals won by Russians and Belarusians will not be included in the medal count.

The national anthems of Russia and Belarus will not be played at the Winter Games, and Russia will not be allowed to participate in the Olympic sliding track competitions in Cortina d'Ampezzo. The relevant international sports federations will decide whether individual athletes from both countries can compete in the individual disciplines.

Several winter sports organizations have reported that the IOC has increased pressure to pave the way for the return of Russians and Belarusians as neutral competitors. The sanctions against Russia and Belarus are a response to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

The IOC had previously suspended Russia's Olympic Committee because it had recognized the four Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Saporischschja. The IOC's decision to allow neutral participation is a step towards easing these sanctions.

Despite the restrictions, the 2026 Winter Olympics are expected to be a significant event, with athletes from around the world competing in various winter sports. The exact details of the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes will be finalised in the coming months.
