The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has approved India's bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking a significant step towards bringing the prestigious event back to the country after a decade.

The potential host cities for the 2030 Games in India are Ahmedabad, Delhi, and Bhubaneswar. Among these, Ahmedabad is currently viewed as a strong contender, thanks to its existing infrastructure and the presence of the Narendra Modi Stadium, which boasts a capacity of 132,000. However, the final decision on the host city is yet to be made, with all three cities being considered viable options.

If Ahmedabad is chosen, it will mark the first time the city hosts the Games. On the other hand, Delhi previously hosted the 2010 edition, providing a wealth of experience in organising such a large-scale event. Bhubaneswar, known for its modern sports facilities, also presents a strong case.

The 2030 Games will be a full-fledged event, aiming to include all medal-earning sports. Executive Council member Rohit Rajpal stated, "The 2030 CWG will be an inclusive Games, featuring traditional and indigenous sports." This decision follows the scaled-down 2026 Glasgow Games, which left out major sports like hockey, badminton, wrestling, and shooting due to cost factors.

The 2030 CWG will have three groups of sports: core sports, sports chosen by the host nation, and additional sports. The IOA joint secretary, Kalyan Chaubey, confirmed that traditional sports like kabaddi and kho kho will be included in the 2030 Games.

India's bid was preceded by the submission of an Expression of Interest, with Ahmedabad as the host city. The nation now has until the August 31 deadline to submit the proposals for the final bid.

A team from Commonwealth Sport, led by Darren Hall, has already visited Ahmedabad to inspect venues and meet Gujarat government officials. The General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport will make the final decision on the host country for the 2030 Games in the last week of November in Glasgow.

Competition for the 2030 Games is fierce, with Qatar also confirming plans to bid for the 2036 Olympics, joining India in the race to host future Games. However, Canada has withdrawn from the race to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, potentially increasing India's chances.

Should India secure the bid, it promises to deliver a spectacular event, reminiscent of the 2010 edition. The countdown to the 2030 Commonwealth Games has officially begun.
