International Nobel Prize winners petition Trump for intervention to release politically detained individuals in Belarus.
In an open letter published on the website of Belarusian analyst Dmitry Bolkunets, a group of 19 Nobel laureates have called upon US President Donald Trump to use his influence to secure the release of political prisoners in Belarus. The letter was penned following a phone call between Trump and Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko on August 15, during which the possibility of releasing the 1300 people imprisoned for political reasons was discussed.
The signatories of the open letter, which include Nobel Peace Prize laureate Oscar Arias, Nobel Literature laureates Svetlana Alexievich and Herta Müller, and a total of 16 laureates in physics, chemistry, medicine, and economics, have also called for an end to politically motivated persecutions in Belarus. They believe that the release of political prisoners would restore justice and pave the way for reconciliation and dialogue.
The end of politically motivated persecutions could potentially facilitate the return of hundreds of thousands of Belarusians who fled the country after the 2020 street protests. The open letter, in addition to requesting the release of political prisoners, now also calls for an end to politically motivated persecutions in Belarus.
While the specific identities of the laureates who signed the open letter are not yet publicly available, the letter has garnered significant attention due to the prestige of the Nobel Prize. The open letter requests Trump to continue his active efforts to secure the immediate release of all political prisoners in Belarus, as previously mentioned. It remains to be seen how the US administration will respond to this urgent call for action.
