The Organisation of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO) has confirmed that the 2026 summit will take place in Ankara, Turkey, with the specific goal of strengthening the alliance to become a stronger, fairer, and more lethal force. The exact date for the summit in Ankara is yet to be set.

NATO leaders' summits are typically announced well in advance, and the 2026 summit follows this tradition. Mark Rutte currently serves as the Secretary-General of NATO.

The 2027 NATO summit is scheduled to take place in Albania. Notably, Istanbul previously hosted the NATO leaders' meeting in 2004, making the 2026 summit in Ankara the second time Turkey will host the allied leaders' meeting.

The focus of the 2026 NATO summit will be on preparing the alliance to face critical challenges. Key focus areas are likely to be burden-sharing among member states, enhancing defense industry resilience, and improving interoperability within the Alliance.

Turkey, as a key NATO member, emphasises the importance of equitable burden-sharing, going beyond just increasing defense budgets. This includes fair access to defense technologies, procurement practices, and full integration of all allies, including those outside the EU, into NATO's security initiatives.

Another objective is the removal of all restrictions on defense industry trade among allies to prevent political disagreements that weaken NATO cohesion. The summit also aims to foster joint defense innovation, encouraging indigenous defense technology development, joint ventures, and inclusive innovation ecosystems to strengthen self-reliance and reduce dependency among NATO members.

These goals align with NATO's ongoing strategic priorities and Turkey’s commitment to security, defense diplomacy, and alliance cohesion. The 2026 NATO summit will take place at the presidential complex of Bestepe, housing the official residence of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The summit is scheduled for July 7 and 8.
