International Leaders in Moscow and Washington D.C. Seek Resolution of the Ukraine Conflict: Meeting Scheduled in Alaska
In a significant development, a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin took place on August 15 at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Alaska. The discussion centred around the resolution of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
According to reports, Trump informed Putin about the upcoming summit in Alaska and shared the main points of his conversation with the Russian leader. Putin described his visit as "timely and very useful."
During the meeting, both leaders expressed a desire for peace and resolution. Russia respects the U.S. position on the urgent need to cease military actions, while Trump announced that he had agreed on many points with the Russian negotiators.
The U.S. President also advised Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to "take the deal" regarding the Ukrainian settlement. However, Trump did not rule out the possibility of Kyiv not striking a deal with Moscow.
In a positive turn of events, Trump announced that Ukrainian President Zelensky will come to the Oval Office on Monday evening for further discussions. Additionally, a meeting in Washington on August 18 was agreed upon to discuss the details of a ceasefire.
The European Union is also getting involved in the negotiations. The EU plans to send its representative, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, to Washington for a meeting with Trump and Zelensky, with the hope that Stubb can help prevent any possible deterioration in relations between Trump and Zelensky.
Interestingly, the Russian side proposed that the conflict resolution should be based on eliminating its root causes and recognizing the inclusion of DNR, LNR, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions into Russia's composition. It is unclear at this point if this proposal will be considered in the upcoming negotiations.
Trump, despite expressing frustration with Putin over ongoing Russian strikes on Ukraine, maintains hope for a peace deal. He emphasized that conversations with Putin are good despite continued violence, indicating a continued commitment to finding a resolution.
The meeting between Trump and Putin lasted approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. As of late August 2025, no new facts related to the earlier mentioned trade deal or sanctions were presented in the current paragraphs. The publication also mentioned the possibility of NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg's participation in the talks.
As the situation unfolds, the world watches with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The August 18 meeting in Washington and the potential trilateral meeting on Ukrainian settlement between the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine on August 22 promise to be key moments in the ongoing negotiations.
